    Getting the Right Acne treatment

Posted under acne soap by Dan Johnson on Monday 12 October 2009

Acne is a skin condition that commonly affects adolescents and less frequently, adults. It results due to clogging of the skins pores with oil from the underlying glands. The clogged pores become easy target for bacterial infection. Eruptions called pimples or zits occur and these leave scars. In severe cases, the skin has painful pus-filled lesions called cysts. Acne treatment consists of preventive and reparative measures. Although a number of over-the-counter medications are effective, always consult a qualified dermatologist who can provide the right advice. Acne is a problem that vanishes as one moves into adulthood, but it can cause emotional distress and loss of self-esteem in the sufferers.

The oil from the sebaceous glands lubricates the skin and keeps it elastic. It is removed when the top layer of the skin is shed in normal wear and tear. However, factors like dirt, dust, poor personal hygiene and harsh chemicals affect the skin adversely. The glands also secrete more oil under the influence of higher hormone levels due to onset of puberty, premenstrual period or stopping or starting birth control pills. When all the aggravating factors persist, there is inflammation of the skin.

There are many types of skin lesions in acnes blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and cysts. A combination of over-the-counter preparations, good skin care and dietary changes is often sufficient for treating acne. For cysts, you would need specialist advice from a dermatologist.

Simple steps that would protect you from acne eruptions are:
Wash your face with slightly warm water twice a day especially when you get in from outdoors. Use a mild soap. Pat your skin dry and do not rub vigorously.
Do not use heavy make up and always remove make up immediately after the outing. Never go to bed with make up on.
Drink at least 12 glasses of water every day. You could throw in fruit and vegetable juices as well. Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol and aerated drinks.
Include fiber in your diet. Get plenty of salads, wholegrain cereals, sprouts and zinc-rich food like fish and apples.
Keep up a regular regimen of exercise to keep your weight under control. Exercise beats obesity, hypertension and constipation the three important triggers for excessive oil secretion.
Treat dandruff immediately with selenium-based shampoos. Wash your hair twice a week.

Topical treatment of acne works on opening up the pores, removing excess oil and preventing the spread of infection. Creams should be applied lightly on the pimples. Do not rub the cream into the skin. Antibiotic creams and gels should be used only under medical supervision. A simple home remedy for acne is applying witch hazel solution and tea tree oil on the eruptions. Take care to avoid the area around the eyes. Never pick, squeeze or press the lesions. This makes the infection spread.

Acne usually does not continue beyond the adolescent years. While the psychological impact could be significant on the teenager, sensible strategies can stave off acne and let him or her enjoy life without the worry of scars.

Combine Benzoyl Peroxide And Adaplene For Quick Acne Treatment

Posted under acne soap by Dan Johnson on Friday 9 October 2009

Benzoyl Peroxide is one of the most commonly used acne treatment. Adaplene is a retinoid and comparatively a recent entrant for treatment of spots. It was found in a study that combining both and applying on acne gives much quicker results compared to the results of treatment with a single drug.

Before we discuss more let us find out about these two drugs.

    Benzoyl Peroxide-

Benzoyl Peroxide is available in many forms such as soap bars, washing lotions, creams, gels, etc. Benzoyl Peroxide is available as both OTC (over the counter) and by prescription. Benzoyl Peroxide - removes excess oil, unclogs the closed pores, and kills the bacteria. By removing excess oil, Benzoyl Peroxide dries the skin. The drying quality is why some users find it irritating. If you have dry skin, use a moisturizer while using Benzoyl Peroxide. As the excess oil gets removed the possibility of new acne developing reduces. By unclogging the pores Benzoyl Peroxide opens the passage for oil and other matter inside to go out and clears the acne. By killing bacteria P.acnes Benzoyl Peroxide reduces infection and also inflammation.

    Adaplene-

Adaplene is a retinoid, and a derivative of Vitamin A. Adaplene is mainly used to treat Acne. Adaplene multiplies the cell turnover of the skin, removes the skin oils, decreases inflammation and speeds up the healing of acne. It not only treats acne but also helps prevent new acne from forming.

    Adaplene - Care While Using

Adaplene is available in liquid, gel or cream and should be applied to acne prone skin and acne affected skin. In the beginning you may find that your acne is getting worse. Keep using Adaplene and slowly the acne will clear. It takes about two to three months for acne to clear with Adaplene usage.

Adaplene should not be applied to skin affected with eczema. If your skin is sun burnt, broken or cut, do not use Adaplene until the skin heals. If you are using any other skincare product, inform your doctor. Many skin care products may irritate the skin if they are used along with Adaplene. For example, products that contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Sulphur, Salicylic Acid, Resorcinol and Alcohol should to be avoided if you are using Adaplene. You should also look at the label of the cosmetics you use as they may contain an ingredient that may cause irritation if used with Adaplene.

Combination- Ask your doctor if you should combine both and use to treat acne. If a combination is not available you can buy both the products and use them one after another on the skin and mix properly. You will get results much quicker and will be free of Acne soon.
